Engage for Success sum up employee engagement as being ‘a workplace approach resulting in the right conditions for all members of an organisation to give their best each day, committed to their organisation’s goals and values, motivated to contribute to organisational success, with an enhanced sense of their own well-being.’
But there’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach that can be applied to get a business to this place. Because as Natalie Allen, Head of Employee Engagement at ZPG, explains, ‘Theories are all well and good, but in practice you have to be flexible and figure out what the most important factors are to your business, not just follow the rule book.’ But there are, as Natalie describes them, ‘a few core enablers’. Do we all know why we’re here?
If you want to get your employees continually driving your business’s success, you need to give them something to believe in that they’re proud to get behind. Simon Sinek’s advice for leaders on this matter is to start with why; if you want to inspire your employees, make sure that you begin by making sure they know not just what your business does, but why you do it.
You scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours
To get the best out of your workforce, you need to cultivate a company culture that promotes trust and respect. People must be provided with all the tools they need to succeed, and when they do, their efforts should be recognised and rewarded.
Keep the conversation flowing
In order to motivate people to push for continued success, they need to feel that their voices are heard. Create a business atmosphere where people are comfortable enough to express their thoughts and opinions, and be sure to demonstrate how they’re listened to and acted upon where appropriate.
